Research Interests

Dr. Caldwell completed a postdoctoral forensic psychology fellowship at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine and the Missouri Department of Mental Health where she specialized in the criminal competencies, civil commitment of sexual offenders, and the evaluation and treatment of mentally ill offenders. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling/Clinical/School Psychology, with an emphasis in clinical-forensic psychology, from the University of California, Santa Barbara. During her graduate studies, she completed a clinical-forensic psychology pre-doctoral internship at Baylor College of Medicine where she focused on the mental health treatment and evaluation of juvenile offenders, gang violence, sex offender treatment and rehabilitation, and child custody evaluations. She earned a B.S. in psychology from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Caldwell’s research is designed to inform legal decision-making about the importance of evidence based mental health programming that is culturally sensitive and relevant, and gender specific. Dr. Caldwell works closely with local law enforcement and community agencies focusing on specific areas of research that include: the development, implementation, and evaluation of a psycho-educational mentoring program, The Bakari Project©, for juvenile offenders; the evaluation of mental health programming for juvenile and adult probationers; and examining culturally relevant risk and protective factors related to juvenile delinquency and violence with an emphasis on mental health issues.
