RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

RESEARCH TRACK

Are you a junior PSY/CD major thinking about pursuing a Ph.D. after graduation? Consider applying to the department's Research Emphasis Track!

The Research Emphasis Track aims to provide PSY/CD students who have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. with an opportunity to participate in advanced independent research training. The track begins in junior year with a two-quarter research internship under the supervision of a faculty member and continues into senior year, culminating with a two-quarter independent empirical senior project. Applicants must be junior PSY or CD majors with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and major GPA of 3.5. This video provides information for interested students. Here is a link to the application (applications are due Fri, Oct 20).

Below is a list of the faculty members who are potentially accepting new Research Track students this year. We encourage you to read about their research on our Faculty Research Interests page in order to find the best fit with your interests, and reach out to them to discuss their research prior to applying (please do not apply to faculty members not on this list as they are not taking research track students this year).

Dr. Lucy Bencharit (social)

Dr. Jennifer Jipson (developmental)

Dr. Linda Lee (developmental)

Dr. James Antony (cognitive/biological)

Dr. Laura Cacciamani (cognitive/biological)

Dr. Jessica Kaczorowski (clinical)

MORE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES!

Qualified students may gain research experience working with faculty researchers as a research intern, as part of or apart from the research track. Arranging a research internship is typically initiated by the student. A listing of faculty research interests can be found here. Not all faculty on this list are actively conducting research at this time, however, see below for faculty members currently recruiting interns:

  • Dr. Bennion & Dr. Antony are looking for research interns interested in human memory to join their lab fall quarter! At this time, we may only have capacity for senior (and possibly junior) PSY/CD majors who are looking to fulfill PSY/CD 448 or PSY/CD 449 (Research Internship) credit. However, if you're interested, please email and we may be able to find space for volunteers (or we'll at least keep your name for future quarters!). It is likely that both virtual and in-person opportunities will be available. Email Dr. Bennion asap at kbennion@calpoly.edu if you are interested or have any questions!
  • Dr. Cacciamani is looking for research interns to help with a project investigating the interplay between brain stimulation, sleep, and haptic perception. The students on this project will be involved with literature searching and reading articles, designing the experiment, and collecting data on human participants. Through this internship, students will be fully trained on the theory and implementation of brain stimulation. A 12-hour/week, 2-quarter commitment is required. Strong candidates should be hard-working, detail-oriented, and have an interest in research, the brain, and cognition. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in gaining research experience before applying to PhD programs. If interested in this position, please fill out this online application, and Dr. C will be in touch. For questions, please email Lcacciam@calpoly.edu.

PSY&CD COURSE UPDATES

CALLING ALL SENIORS!

If you are now a senior based on completed coursework, make sure that your intended graduation date is updated with the Cal Poly “changing your graduation term” form on the registrar website.

Spaces Still Available in PSY&CD Fall Courses

The following courses still have availability: Social Psychology (PSY252-01),  Adolescence (PSY 306), Psych of Gender (PSY 324), Intro to Clinical and Counseling Psychology (PSY370), Sensation and Perception (PSY 430), and Cross Cultural Psychology (PSY 465). The Add/Drop deadline is October 2nd.

Registration Tips

  • Understanding Waitlists: The enrollment system automatically monitors class enrollment.  When a space opens up, the first eligible student from the top of the waitlist is added to the class. Not sure how to waitlist a class? Find instructions here.

  • Instructor Communication: Your faculty receive many emails about course enrollment. If they do not respond to you, it's not because they don't care about your concern. Rather, faculty also have to wait for the automated waitlist process to complete - they do not receive permission codes to add students until after the 4th day of fall classes! In other words, they can't help you until Wednesday.  If you have an extenuating circumstance that you believe requires special enrollment consideration, please email Dr. Langner at clangner@calpoly.edu

Field Internships for Winter

You are eligible IF you are graduating W24 or S24. The process will begin around week 4. Please check your email for an invitation to the Canvas site called PSY/CD Field Internship Orientation. This site will help you understand the steps to take to secure a field internship in Fall 2023. (You do not just enroll in internship - you start arranging your internship site the quarter before!)

We're trying to form a Cal Poly dragon boat team and are looking for folks who might want to be part of it! We're holding a free paddling clinic/workshop in Morro Bay on Sunday, October 8 from 9am-1pm--no prior experience or equipment is necessary! If you think you might be interested in joining the team and/or attending the clinic/workshop, please take a second to fill out this short interest survey and Dr. Anne Jansen will be in touch with more information; you can also reach out to her directly at amjansen@calpoly.edu.

If you have questions or want a little more information, you can attend an optional info session on Tuesday, October 3 from 11:00-12:00 in Building 38, Room 114. Stop by and bring a friend or two!
