PSY&CD SPOTLIGHT

For this week's PSY&CD spotlight feature, we are highlighting our new PSY/CD department office student assistant Maya Sutama. Read on to learn more about her!

Maya Sutama, 3rd year Psychology Student

Is there anything from any of your previous educators (at any point in your life) that has stuck with you?

When I was in high school, I had a French teacher who would make us write down our vocabulary words 10 times in red, 10 times in blue, 10 times in green, and 10 times in black. She called this the "whiteboard method", which we did every class period for all four years. While I thought it was silly at first, I soon saw how helpful it was. I still find the "whiteboard method" extremely valuable when I need to memorize small chunks of information.

Do you have any hobbies that people might not know about?

I love to play board games! Some of my favorites are Settlers of Catan and Articulate. I also like any card games or trivia games.

What is your most marked characteristic?

People say I smile a lot!

Student Application for Latine/x Course Grant

The Psychology and Child Development Department is committed to supporting our Latine students via educational initiatives that center Latine students and foster a sense of belonging across campus. For the purposes of this HSI mini-grant, two Latine faculty will co-create Cal Poly’s first-ever Latine Psychology course with a group of Latine psychology students during the Winter and Spring 2024 quarters. In line with HSI-taskforce recommendations, this course provides opportunities for Latine students to engage in servingness through the co-creation of decolonial approaches to psychology education.

CLASS UPDATES (WINTER REGISTRATION)

The following courses still have open seats for Winter!

PSY 325 Positive Psychology: This course HAS AVAILABLE SEATS. It will cover the scientific study of the enhancement of strengths and optimal functioning in humans. Includes basic research, assessment and helping concepts in understanding optimal functioning within diverse populations. Instructor: K. Makena, Time: TR 2-4pm.

CD/PSY 461 Senior Project Seminar Please contact department chair, Carrie Langner (clangner@calpoly.edu) if you are graduating in June - you should take 461 in Winter and 462 in Spring.

 

CALLING ALL SENIORS!

If you are now a senior based on completed coursework, make sure that your intended graduation date is updated with the Cal Poly “changing your graduation term” form on the registrar website.

Cognitive Neuroscience Club

Join the Cognitive Neuroscience Club! Coming Winter Quarter, 2024. The Cal Poly Cognitive Neuroscience Club is an interdisciplinary club, aimed at connecting students from all different majors to promote dynamic conversations within the field. The club will focus on creating valuable opportunities for members to grow as students and professionals by equipping them with the necessary skills for their future endeavors. The Cal Poly Cognitive Neuroscience club will strengthen connections to on-campus faculty research projects and off-campus opportunities.

Any major is welcome to join! If you are interested, please fill out the form below. There are multiple officer positions open (no experience required). A second form will be sent out if you indicate interest in a board position in the initial interest form.

INTERESTED IN A RESEARCH INTERNSHIP?

There are additional options beyond the 'research track' (applications due at beginning of Junior year). When faculty members are looking for research interns, we will post that info in the Tuesday Newsday. Another way to seek out research experience is to talk to your professors in office hours about your interest in research and whether they know of any projects or will keep you in mind for future projects. A few of our students have secured research internships with faculty in other departments at Cal Poly and in some cases it is possible to substitute internship units for the PSYCD internship requirements.
