PSY&CD SPOTLIGHT
This week we launch our PSY&CD spotlight feature... Our new front desk student assistant and psychology major, Inga Larson, and new department chair, Carrie Langner have interviewed each other. Read on to learn more about them.
Dr. Carrie Langner, Department Chair
- Who are your favorite writers?
- My favorite authors are Marilynne Robinson, Michael Chabon, and Margaret Atwood. Robinson’s book “Gilead” is probably my favorite novel.
- Is there anything from any of your previous educators (at any point in your life) that has stuck with you?
- Yes! My undergraduate advisor told me that even right up to the time before his retirement, he would still get the physical feelings of nervousness before a lecture but that the way he thought about it was very different from when he first started. This was a surprise to me because he is such an excellent teacher and speaker. I have found this really helpful in my career, to reframe my response to challenging situations and to remember the difference between our internal experience and external presentation.
- What is a location that has sentimental value to you?
- I grew up in Michigan and there is a lake in the middle of the lower peninsula that my family would visit and camp at every summer. After many years away, we’ve started going there again in the summers when I bring my kids home to see their extended family. I love seeing my kids enjoying the place where my happiest childhood memories occurred.
Inga Larson, PSY/CD Student Assistant
- What is something that you love about your hometown?
- I am from Tacoma, Washington, and I love Fall in Tacoma because there is a noticeable season shift. Being away from rainy days has made me realize that maybe I like the rain more than I thought (something I never thought I would say). There is also a strong sense of community in my hometown and lots of fun events going on in the fall!
- Where would you most like to live?
- I am not set on a location yet, but for right now, I really would like to live in a city! I have never lived in a real metropolitan area so I would love to have that experience. Ideally, I would love to live in San Francisco or New York for some time!
- Which talent would you most like to have?
- I would love to be magically transformed to have an amazing singing voice. I love music so much and think it would be really satisfying to be able to sing along really well. Plus, it would be so fun to be able to slay in karaoke!!!

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
RESEARCH TRACK
Are you a junior PSY/CD major thinking about pursuing a Ph.D. after graduation? Consider applying to the department's Research Emphasis Track!
The Research Emphasis Track aims to provide PSY/CD students who have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. with an opportunity to participate in advanced independent research training. The track begins in junior year with a two-quarter research internship under the supervision of a faculty member and continues into senior year, culminating with a two-quarter independent empirical senior project. Applicants must be junior PSY or CD majors with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and major GPA of 3.5. This video provides information for interested students. Here is a link to the application (applications are due Fri, Oct 20).

We encourage you to read about their research on our Faculty Research Interests page in order to find the best fit with your interests, and reach out to them to discuss their research prior to applying (please do not apply to faculty members not on this list as they are not taking research track students this year).

MORE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES!
Qualified students may gain research experience working with faculty researchers as a research intern, as part of or apart from the research track. Arranging a research internship is typically initiated by the student. A listing of faculty research interests can be found here. Dr. Cacciamani is currently seeking interns:
- Dr. Cacciamani is looking for research interns to help with a project investigating the interplay between brain stimulation, sleep, and haptic perception. The students on this project will be involved with literature searching and reading articles, designing the experiment, and collecting data on human participants. Through this internship, students will be fully trained on the theory and implementation of brain stimulation. A 12-hour/week, 2-quarter commitment is required. Strong candidates should be hard-working, detail-oriented, and have an interest in research, the brain, and cognition. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in gaining research experience before applying to PhD programs. Engineers Without Borders, Cal Poly is a student-led non-profit organization that supports community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while creating multidisciplinary and leadership experiences for students. RESEARCH PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITY
Dear Participant:
You are being invited to participate in a research study. The purpose of this study is to provide a more holistic and contextualized perspective of Asian American and Asian international students’ experiences in higher education, by investigating risk and protective factors impacting Asian American students’ well-being. This study is conducted by Stephanie Chin and Dr. Amanda Mitchell of the University of Louisville, Department of Education and Human Development.
Your participation in the study will involve completing a web-based survey on Qualtrics. The study will take approximately 25-30 minutes to complete. There are no known risks for your participation in this research study other than possible discomfort in answering personal questions. The information you provide will shed light on psychosociocultural factors impacting the well-being of Asian American students in higher education. Qualtrics does not collect identifying information such as your name, email address, or IP address. Therefore, your responses will remain confidential, but absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed over the Internet. Your information will be stored and secured by password protected computer. The information collected may not benefit you directly. The information learned in this study may be helpful to others.
You are eligible to participate if:
* You are 18 years of age or older
* Identify as Asian or Asian American residing in the United States
* Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the United States (Bachelor’s level and above)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How can I learn more about senior project?
We have updated information about Senior Projects on the department website.
- PSY/CD 461 is a seminar-style class where you attend class and work with a team to identify an area of interest and conduct a literature review on that topic. Registration for this is through the usual process.
- PSY/CD 462 is a supervision-mode class where your team gets matched with a faculty advisor who guides you in developing and conducting a project related to your literature review from PSY/CD 461. The final deliverable includes a written paper that usually consists of sections typical to APA articles (Abstract, Literature Review, Method, Results, Discussion, References).Registration for this is by permission number given out during PSY/CD 461.
