PSY/CD Forum to Discuss Election Thursday, 11/5, 11:10-12
Your faculty are always here for you. Drs. Jay Bettergarcia, Julie Garcia, Carrie Langner, and Amber Williams will facilitate a discussion about the election, share some helpful resources and check in with everyone. Reminder re. Grading Options
Students have until the last day of classes (Tuesday November 24th) to change their grading basis to CR/NC from letter grade or vice versa. Read the Cal Poly guidelines here: CR/NC
Winter 2021 Registration is open NOW
Be sure to check your graduation date and your Degree Planner to make sure all of your information is up to date. Also check your Student Center to be certain you don't have any holds.
Child Development Students
- CD 302 is open for enrollment only by permission only. Due to the large number of seniors, seats are reserved for students graduating this winter or spring. Email Robyn Hastin at rhastin@calpoly.edu for enrollment assistance.
- CD 461 usually requires completion of the GWR prior to enrollment. This quarter we are waiving the GWR prerequisite. Contact Robyn Hastin at rhastin@calpoly.edu for enrollment assistance.
- Field Work Internship assignments have not yet been determined. Use your first rotation to enroll in other classes and we will contact you with enrollment information for these other classes before Winter Break. If you are a senior graduating this year, please know that we WILL help you secure the internships needed for on-time graduation.
Psychology Students
- If you are graduating in June and have not yet taken PSY 461, do not worry. We will get you into this class in Winter. Email Dr. Langner clangner@calpoly.edu

Be sure to reach out to talk with your faculty advisor on a regular basis. PSY First Year Students and new transfers received an email from the department with the name of your faculty advisor. Study to Learn Expectations & Support
Online learning feels very different from learning in the classroom. You might be wondering how much you are expected to study/work for each class. You'll be most successful if you follow the standard Cal Poly expectation of 2-3 hours per unit per week outside of class time. For asynchronous classes, this is in addition to the equivalent class time of roughly 4 hours a week for a 4 unit class. So, if your class doesn't meet at specific times, plan on spending 12-16 hours a week to complete reading, review of materials, and assignments. Spacing this out into daily blocks of 2-3 hours per class might be a good strategy. Some tools to help you plan your time are available here: Study Resources

Wondering how to join department clubs?
Physical distance doesn't have to mean social distance. Get involved in the Poly Child Development Club, the Psychology Club and/or join Psi Chi, the National Honors Society for Psychology.

Children's Hospital of Orange County Summer Internship Program.
The MI3 Summer Internship Program at CHOC gives students the unique opportunity to explore the future of healthcare — invaluable experience for anyone interested in or exploring the health care field. The interns learn to problem solve and create solutions unique to hospitals. Through the opportunities provided within the internship, students are immersed in several emerging areas that are relevant to the future practice of pediatric medicine.
The program is open to applicants in high school, college, graduate school or medical school who are already interested in a career in healthcare. Students must be at least a freshman in high school to participate.

Summer Undergraduate Internship positions are available through the RISE program at Rutgers University - New Brunswick. The application opens on November 1st, 2020, and reviews will start in late January, 2021. The 2021 RISE Summer program starts on June 1st, 2021.

University of Wisconsin Psychology Research Experience Program is NSF-funded and provides 10 weeks of intensive mentored research experience in a Dept. of Psychology or affiliated lab, plus a weekly data science boot camp, for URM/1st gen/low income undergraduates interested in a career in academic psychology or neuroscience or data science. RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION AT DUKE/UNC on Toddler to Teenager Anxiety and Resiliency (STTAR) ! STTAR is a new 5-year study where we will be recruiting up to 917 adolescents who were first seen at the Duke Center for Developmental Epidemiology when they were between 2-5 years old. The goal of STTAR is to better understand how experiences in early childhood can shape brain development and outcomes in adolescence.
The Clinical Research Specialist, Sr. (CRS or research assistant/RA) will have the opportunity to work with a team of faculty from Duke University (Kimberly Carpenter), UNC Chapel Hill (Margaret Sheridan), NYU (Helen Egger), and University of Vermont(Bill Copeland). They will be assisting in the activities of the Duke University site of the study, which will include 1) Finding and re-contacting original Duke Preschool Study participants; 2) Consenting them for the current study; 3) Completing online surveys with participants; 4) Scheduling imaging/diagnostic assessments; 5) Assisting the UNC study team in collecting and analyzing MRI data; 6) Completing structured diagnostic interviews; and 7) Supporting the study team in the preparation of conference abstracts, manuscripts, and grants as appropriate. Furthermore, the CRS will be expected to contribute to team meetings, help with IRB and grant reporting needs, and will assist in any additional day-to-day duties as needed to support the study team. Finally, this individual will also have the opportunity to participate in the supervision of undergraduate students on the study team.
This is a full-time position with benefits. The position requires a bachelor’s degree, three professional references, and a passion for contributing to our understanding of childhood/adolescent mental health and brain development. While previous research experience is a bonus, it is not required. We value candidates who are dedicated and motivated to learn and grow with our study. In that light, please make sure all relevant experience (e.g. working with children or adolescents in a non-research setting, customer service experience, etc.) is in your application materials and feel free to share how non-traditional experiences make you well qualified for this position.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I take my CD/PSY classes Credit/No Credit in Fall 2020?
The PSY & CD will continue to remove the limit on CR/NC units for undergraduate courses in both majors for Fall 2020. Graduate courses will be graded. Here's what this means:
- PSY & CD students can take any or all of their PSY & CD courses this quarter CR/NC. Undergraduate students need to earn a C- or better to earn CR.
- This applies to PSY & CD minor courses too.
- If you are doing a minor in a different department or college, you will need to check with them about their rules for this Fall.
- If you are on a change of major contract check with the department you are trying to change into about whether you can take a course C/NC. Students on contract to change into PSY or CD must meet our requirements by taking a total of 3 GRADED courses. In other words, it is in your best interest to take your PSY & CD courses for a grade this quarter.
Other Important Notes about C/NC:
- Students have until the last day of classes (Tuesday November 24th) to change their grading basis to CR/NC from letter grade or vice versa.
- None of the CR/NC units students take during Fall 2020 will count toward the 16 unit limit.
- There will be no limit in the number of units you can take CR/NC during Fall 2020.

How do I get help with the technology I need for my online classes?
It will be essential to have regular internet access this quarter. It will also be helpful to have access to a computer, but in most cases you should be able to access content on a smart device (e.g., iPad, tablet, phone). If you need any help with technology send an email to retention@calpoly.edu.

NOTE: If you you are a CD senior but have not yet satisfied the GWR we will waive the prereq for CD 461. Please email Robyn Hastin (rhastin@calpoly.edu) if you are a senior, have not taken the GWR and would like to enroll in CD461.
