Internship information for Winter 2021 available NOW with Q/A on Friday 10/9th.
Are you a psychology or child development major, who has at least junior standing, and has taken PSY 323 (and also CD 230 for CD majors)? Want to take the PSY/CD 453 or PSY/CD 454 field internship course for credit next quarter? If so, please read further!
There is a mandatory presentation that you must watch and survey to complete by October 9 to secure an internship placement for Winter 2020.
Winter 2020 Internship Presentation
We'll host the Q &A on Friday, October 9, from 2-3pm at this zoom link: https://calpoly.zoom.us/j/98341578160. (You must authenticate with your CP email to join the meeting.) Be sure to review the video presentation PRIOR to attending the Q & A session.
You MUST watch the mandatory presentation, and complete the survey discussed in the presentation, IF you will be in your first quarter of field internship in Winter 2020 OR if you will be switching to a new internship site from Fall 2020. You do NOT need to attend the internship placement meeting if you are staying at the same internship site from Fall 2020, OR if you are doing a research internship* with a faculty member.

*To explore the possibility of a research internship, please review faculty research interests on our faculty page. Not all faculty are accepting research interns at this time. To find out whether you might join a faculty research lab, attend the office hours for professors whose research activities match your interests.
Research Emphasis Track applications due Friday, 10/9th
Are you a junior PSY/CD major thinking about pursuing a Ph.D. after graduation? Consider applying to the department's Research Emphasis Track! The Research Emphasis Track aims to provide PSY/CD students who have a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. with an opportunity to participate in advanced independent research training. The track begins in junior year with a two-quarter research internship under the supervision of a faculty member and continues into senior year, culminating with a two-quarter independent empirical senior project. Applicants must be junior PSY or CD majors with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and major GPA of 3.5.

These mentors each work with a team of incoming students (i.e. freshmen, new transfers and internal transfers) in our PSY/CD 102 Orientation course to help strengthen community and provide important support as our new majors navigate their time at Cal Poly. Helpees STILL needed ASAP for PSY 323 classes!
All Psychology and Child Development majors take PSY 323, The Helping Relationship, where students learn to apply a problem management model, in a respectful, supportive way,to a volunteer "Helpee's" personal concern or goal. While this is NOT professional therapy or counseling, students who volunteer to be Helpees typically find the experience of this collaborative helping model to be useful in carving out time for reflection and change and often find the process to be supportive, helpful, and growth oriented.

Study to Learn Expectations & Support
Online learning feels very different from learning in the classroom. You might be wondering how much you are expected to study/work for each class. You'll be most successful if you follow the standard Cal Poly expectation of 2-3 hours per unit per week outside of class time. For asynchronous classes, this is in addition to the equivalent class time of roughly 4 hours a week for a 4 unit class. So, if your class doesn't meet at specific times, plan on spending 12-16 hours a week to complete reading, review of materials, and assignments. Spacing this out into daily blocks of 2-3 hours per class might be a good strategy. Some tools to help you plan your time are available here: Study Resources

Wondering how to join department clubs?
Physical distance doesn't have to mean social distance. Get involved in the Poly Child Development Club, the Psychology Club and/or join Psi Chi, the National Honors Society for Psychology.

Join the FREE 2020 Virtual California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education October 12-16, 2020
The Virtual Forum will take place over the full week, with all-day programs designed to acquaint students from underrepresented groups with the academic and career opportunities associated with advanced study in a wide range of disciplines at the doctoral level. Students will have the opportunity to meet representatives of the nation’s leading graduate schools offering Master’s and Ph.D. degrees and to attend workshops and panel sessions.

Research, Educational and Employment Opportunities
- The University of Michigan Psychology Department is hosting their STAR (Students Tackling Advanced Research) Scholars program which is an educational opportunity outreach program designed to support and guide underrepresented students to become involved in research and understand its application in the real world. These students engage with research in a meaningful way, connect with current Psychology PhD students, and prepare for careers in and out of academia. The program consists of two parts: (1) a Fall Seminar Series and (2) Winter Workshops and Mentoring Program. For more information visit their website.
- Interested in pursuing a PhD in Psychology? Join Stanford psychology graduate students, research staff, and faculty for Paths to PhD, a FREE one-day information session and workshop for those considering applying to research positions and PhD programs in psychology.
- CSULB has several graduate programs. Find info here: MA-Psychological Research (MAPR), MS-Human Factors (MSHF), and MS-Industrial/Organizational Psychology (MSIO).
- The Cal Poly minor in Exercise & Sport Studies, through the Department of Kinesiology & Public Health, is a great way for students to prepare for careers such as sport psychology, physical education, athletic training, coaching, or personal training. Enrolling in the 29-unit minor is also a great way to learn more about your own personal interests in sport, exercise and fitness. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I take my CD/PSY classes Credit/No Credit?
The PSY & CD will continue to remove the limit on CR/NC units for undergraduate courses in both majors for Fall 2020. Graduate courses will be graded. Here's what this means:
- PSY & CD students can take any or all of their PSY & CD courses this quarter CR/NC. Undergraduate students need to earn a C- or better to earn CR.
- This applies to PSY & CD minor courses too.
- If you are doing a minor in a different department or college, you will need to check with them about their rules for this Fall.
- If you are on a change of major contract check with the department you are trying to change into about whether you can take a course C/NC. Students on contract to change into PSY or CD must meet our requirements by taking a total of 3 GRADED courses. In other words, it is in your best interest to take your PSY & CD courses for a grade this quarter.
Other Important Notes about C/NC:
- Students have until the last day of classes (Tuesday November 24th) to change their grading basis to CR/NC from letter grade or vice versa.
- None of the CR/NC units students take during Fall 2020 will count toward the 16 unit limit.
- There will be no limit in the number of units you can take CR/NC during Fall 2020.

How do I get help with the technology I need for my online classes?
It will be essential to have regular internet access this quarter. It will also be helpful to have access to a computer, but in most cases you should be able to access content on a smart device (e.g., iPad, tablet, phone). If you need any help with technology send an email to retention@calpoly.edu.

How can I learn more about senior project?
We have updated information about Senior Projects on the department website including an Online Learning Update.
NOTE: If you you are a CD senior but have not yet satisfied the GWR we will waive the prereq for CD 461. Please email Robyn Hastin (rhastin@calpoly.edu) if you are a senior, have not taken the GWR and would like to enroll in CD461.
