PSY&CD SPOTLIGHT

Samantha Pomerantz (she/her) has recently joined PSY/CD as an Administrative Support Assistant. Stop by the department office to say hello!

Is there anything from any of your previous educators (at any point in your life) that has stuck with you?

I was fortunate to have had a teacher who cared deeply about her students’ wellbeing. When I was struggling to balance my health and cultural productivity pressures, she said, “you are a human being, not a human doing.” This word play reminder felt revolutionary at the time.

Are you a fan of musicals?

YES! I was a theater kid growing up and fell in love with musicals at an early age. I got to visit Broadway on class trips and the West End when I lived near London. Some favorites have been Matilda, In the Heights, and SIX.

Who are your favorite writers?

Right now some of my favorite authors include Glennon Doyle, Andre Aciman, James Baldwin, Emily Dickinson, and Ocean Vuong.

What is something you love about your hometown?

My favorite thing about the place I grew up is the way the foliage changes with each season. My hometown is in Maryland, where the seasons are quite pronounced. I love the sensory experience of watching the leaves change and the different aromas that signify the passage of time.

UNDERSTANDING PSY&CD INTERNSHIPS

There are TWO types of internships that are usually completed in junior or senior year...

Fieldwork: Students gain experience working within local social service and governmental agencies, schools, businesses, and other organizations.

Research: Qualified students interested in research experience may find opportunities to work within faculty research labs. These positions are limited.

See our internships page for more detail.

FIELDWORK INTERNSHIP PROCESS

Fieldwork internships in Winter 2025 are only available to students with senior standing or expected graduation dates of Winter 2025, Spring 2025, and Fall 2025.

**Important internship updates! Please read!!
  • All eligible students will be invited to the internship canvas by Week 5 of Winter Term.
  • You can begin contacting sites you are interested in during Week 6. Please first email the faculty coordinator to determine whether the site is taking students next quarter. The faculty coordinator will also provide you with the contact information for the site. Faculty will not provide contact information before Week 6.
  • Feel free to email Dr. Jessica Kaczorowski at jkaczoro@calpoly.edu with questions

INTERESTED IN A RESEARCH INTERNSHIP?

There are additional options beyond the 'research track' (applications due at beginning of Junior year). When faculty members are looking for research interns, we will post that info in the Tuesday Newsday. Another way to seek out research experience is to talk to your professors in office hours about your interest in research and whether they know of any projects or will keep you in mind for future projects. A few of our students have secured research internships with faculty in other departments at Cal Poly and in some cases it is possible to substitute internship units for the PSYCD internship requirements.

Tentative Course Offerings (TCO) for 2024-25

Please always check our TCO because it is where we first publish our updates. When planning what you'd like to take in future quarters you can take a look at the TCO to see when sections are likely to be offered and what their modality will be (in-person vs. online).

The Puente Program

Puente translates from Spanish to bridge because we like to say that we create the bridge to success. The Puente Program is a state funded program generally found in Northern California high schools and community colleges as a college preparatory program. At Cal Poly we are a club that advances the lineage of puente beyond their high school graduation or associate's degree.

This year is the first year that puente has expanded onto college campuses in order to have former puente students from high schools or community colleges come onto campus and feel an immediate community that they can identify with. Along with being a social club for Puentistas, we also host several campus tours for Puentistas who are thinking about applying to cal poly. Puente is important because it primarily serves low income, first generation students in order to restore equity and help them cross over the bridge. Puente is a family and it is open to anyone who wants to succeed, but especially those who want to see others succeed!

2025 National Symposium for Academic Palliative Care Education and Research

The symposium will be held at California State University San Marcos on Monday, June 2 - Tuesday, June 3, with workshops on Wednesday, June 4.
The theme for this year’s symposium is titled: It Takes a Village to Weave Connection and Inclusivity into Compassionate Whole Person Care. We are focusing on uniting educators, healthcare professionals, researchers, students, and community leaders to develop strategies for inclusive, compassionate care. Our 2025 symposium provides a special opportunity for family therapists and students to showcase the critical role they play in supporting individuals and families facing life-changing events.
Opportunities for Family Therapy Faculty and Students:
Call for Abstracts: The abstract submission portal is open until January 10, 2025. This is an amazing opportunity for nursing students and faculty conducting research related to palliative care to present their work, receive feedback, and engage with an audience dedicated to enhancing care quality and inclusivity.
Scholarships: Scholarships are available for both professionals and students to attend our 2025 Symposium. Applications for scholarships are due February 4th.
Symposium Registration: Early Bird Registration Opens in January 2025!
Attending the symposium will enable family therapy faculty and students to participate in poster sessions, connect with an interdisciplinary network of professionals, and join discussions focused on advancing compassionate, whole-person care. Our plenary sessions feature leading experts in palliative care, providing valuable insights on supporting families through complex health challenges.
Additionally, we are offering post-symposium workshops on June 4, designed for students, faculty, and healthcare professionals, with hands-on approaches to implementing palliative care in both clinical and community settings. These workshops will be especially relevant for family therapists looking to expand their skills in addressing the relational and emotional needs of families impacted by serious health conditions.
Please visit our website for more information on abstract submissions and event details, which will be regularly updated as the symposium approaches. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at palcareadmin1@csusm.edu
