- Last day to log in and adjust your Degree Planner to avoid being placed in the last rotation appointment (Degree Planner non-compliant) for Spring 2021 term by 5:00 p.m.

- If you still want to add a course, please email the instructor directly to see if they will take additional students. Priority will be given to students in the following order: 1) PSY & CD majors who do not have 12 units, 2) graduating PSY & CD seniors, 3) graduating PSY & CD minors, 4) students on change of major contracts into PSY or CD, 5) all other PSY & CD minors. If you don't hear back it means the instructor is not accepting more students.

We understand that it's frustrating when you don't get into classes in the quarter that you anticipated. Be sure to look at the Tentative Course Offerings page to see which classes will be offered in Spring.

Apply to become a PSY 323 Helpee by this Friday! Students find this to be a fantastic experience and we need your help!

All Psychology and Child Development majors take PSY 323, The Helping Relationship. In this course, students learn to apply a problem management model in  respectful, supportive ways to a volunteer's personal concern or goal. While this is NOT professional therapy or counseling, students who volunteer to be "helpees" typically find the experience of this collaborative helping model to be useful in carving out time for reflection and change and often find the process to be supportive, helpful, and growth oriented. Be prepared to commit to 3 50-minute sessions.

To learn more about becoming a helpee, read more here, or watch this video. To sign up, complete this form. Note that Dr. Estrada is on sabbatical this quarter so all questions should go to Dr. Jennifer Jipson (jjipson@calpoly.edu).

Spring Field Internship Information (PSY/CD 453, PSY/CD 454)

talking graphic

ONLY students who will be in their second quarter of internship in Spring (i.e. are currently enrolled in either PSY 453 or CD 453) OR those who need to take their first quarter of internship in spring to graduate in Fall 2021, will be eligible for Spring internship.  Your graduation date will be verified.  Students with junior standing will not be placed in internship for Spring 2021. If you meet these characteristics, please read further.

There is a mandatory presentation that you must watch and survey to complete by January 29 (link forthcoming) to secure an internship placement for Spring 2021.  You only need to watch this, and fill out the related survey if you will be at NEW site in Spring 2021 (i.e., first quarter of internship or second quarter of internship at a different site than Winter).  You do not need to watch this video or fill out the survey if you are doing a research internship* with a faculty member.

We'll host the Q &A on Friday, January 29 from 12-1.  Zoom link TBA.  Be sure to review the video presentation PRIOR to attending the Q & A session.

  • IF you will be in your first quarter of field internship in Winter 2020 OR if you will be switching to a new internship site from Fall 2020, you MUST watch the mandatory presentation, and complete the survey discussed in the presentation
  • You do NOT need to attend the internship placement meeting if you are staying at the same internship site from Fall 2020.

Please read more about internships, including prerequisites and field work sites, here. However, please note that some fieldwork sites on our list may be unavailable due to public health restrictions.

*To explore the possibility of a research internship, please review faculty research interests on our faculty page. Not all faculty are accepting research interns at this time. To find out whether you might join a faculty research lab, attend the office hours for professors whose research activities match your interests.

  • Study to Learn Expectations & Support

25-35

Online learning feels very different from learning in the classroom. You might be wondering how much you are expected to study/work for each class. You'll be most successful if you follow the standard Cal Poly expectation of 2-3 hours per unit per week outside of class time. For asynchronous classes, this is in addition to the equivalent class time of roughly 4 hours a week for a 4 unit class. So, if your class doesn't meet at specific times, plan on spending 12-16 hours a week to complete reading, review of materials, and assignments. Spacing this out into daily blocks of 2-3 hours per class might be a good strategy.  Some tools to help you plan your time are available here:  Study Resources

The Academic Skills Center also has fantastic resources to help you plan your daily activities in the short and long-term. Time Management Schedules

Internships and mentoring programs

  • The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Search the 2021 REU opportunities for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences here! Deadlines vary per program.

  • The Lila R. Gleitman Undergraduate Summer Fellowship Program in Interdisciplinary Mind and Brain Studies at Penn is a full-time, 10-week research experience from 6/7/21-8/14/21. Admitted students will be awarded a $4500 salary stipend for research work with a Penn faculty mentor. The first week of the program will include workshop-style sessions with faculty as well as a short training course in R programming, and weekly lunches will bring program participants together for research discussions throughout the summer. For more information, and to apply, please visit  : https://mindcore.sas.upenn.edu/research/summer/ The deadline for applications is January 31, 2021.
  • The University of Utah is seeking paid full-time summer research assistants for their Summer Program in Undergraduate research (SPUR 2021). Don't miss out on this opportunity to earn $5000 while gaining extensive research experience! View all of the available projects in Social & Behavioral Sciences here and apply here by January 31st.
